Heartburn and GERD

Heartburn is a burning pain just behind the breastbone in the chest. The pain is felt more when lying down or bending over. It may be caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease which effects the muscle that keeps the top of the stomach sealed. This may allow the contents of the stomach including stomach acid to go up into the esophagus and cause irritation. Heartburns can be treated with over-the-counter medicines such as antacid. Occasional heartburns are common and will not cause much damage. If heartburns happens very frequently and effects daily life. It may be a more serious problem and requires medical attention.
