Diagram of digestive system |
Found in this system are our Mouth, Esophagus, Liver, Stomach, Small and Large Intestines, Colon and many other organs that function together in our body. Most of the organs in this system are like very long tubes carrying food through the body to different organs.
Journey of Food
What we consumes first enters from our mouth where food is chewed into smaller pieces by our teeth. Then it travels down the esophagus and into the stomach. The stomach is like a sack, it contains stomach acid which helps to further break down and liquefy food. When this process is finished the food goes to the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum, after that it goes through the jejunum and ileum which is the final part of the small intestine. During this part of the journey, digestive enzymes made by the inner wall of the small intestine such as bile and pancreatic enzymes help to break down food. Next, the food passes through the large intestine where some of the water and chemicals like sodium (electrolytes) are removed. Microbes in the large intestine such as bacterias like Bacteroides, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Klebsiella helps to digest. At the end waste is stored in the rectum until its disposed when the washroom is used.
