Before other modern medicines were invented. Antacids were commonly used to reduce symptoms of gastro-oesophageal (heartburn or inflammation of the gullet caused by acid reflux), it is used to neutralize stomach acid and it is used to relive some symptoms caused by stomach ulcers and duodenum.
Antacid is now used less to treat these symptoms. Newer medications such as proton pump inhibitors and H2-receptor antagonists are used more commonly. These are more effective than Antacid because Antacid works only as a temporary relief to symptoms by neutralizing acid, these modern medicines reduces the amount of acid the stomach creates therefore giving long-term results and solves the problem.
Antacids are still presently used to quickly relieve discomforts involving stomach acid. Mostly by people who commonly experience pain from the acidity being too high.
